Io moth (automeris io) -taken in early July
A female Io moth, it seems, based on its dark coloring. Both sexes have the very distinct eye spots on the hind wings. They are large moths with a wing span of 2-1/2 to 3 inches.
The Io is a member of the Saturniidae family which is comprised of some of the largest, and most striking moths, most inhabiting tropical and subtropical areas of the world. The Io is one of a number of species of Saturniids that inhabits North America.
